April 2022: The positive economic impact of rapid genomic testing for critically ill infants and children

Multiple studies have demonstrated the clinical benefit of genomic testing for critically ill newborns with rare diseases, but the results could theoretically be returned faster today than they have been in recent years. So, to assess the economic impact of a faster turn-around of results to the patient, a team of researchers in Australia modeled the results of a three-day turnaround time based on data from a cohort of infants from which they had previously initiated the use of rapid genomic testing with a two- to three-week time to result.

On this month’s GenePod, Zornitza Stark, a doctor and clinical geneticist at the Victorian Clinical Genetics Services in Melbourne, Australia, discusses the positive economic impact of shortened return times for results.
